In 1803, William Slater, the brother of Samuel Slater established the Slater Mill along the banks of the Blackstone River and established the town of Slatersville which became the first planned mill village with all villages in the U.S. modeled after it. The Town common stands today with its spired church, the town green, and a row of beautiful Greek Revival homes that once housed the mill's executives. Slatersville was established as a self sufficient community and today one can walk to shops, restaurants, library,schools, parks, and post office. A strong sense of community is found in North Smithfield.
Besides Slatersville are other towns all with their unique characterist such as Union Village, named after the nation's first bank, Union Bank. Another historically significant area,Union Village has many beautiful homes located dating back to the 1700's. These homes have features that are typical of old homes such as millwork and carvings, elaborate fireplace mantles, and wood molding reflective of the high quality workmanship of the day.
A major benefit to commuters is the immediate access to highways. Many residents work in and around Boston, MA, Providence, and Worcester, MA. making for an easy commute points North and South. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, grocery stores all within a few minutes drive. The Blackstone River offers recreation opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and rafting.The beautiful Blackstone Valley Bikeway runs parallel to the Blackstone River for bicycling, walking, and running with stunning views along the way.
The public and private schools are highly ranked with the majority of students going on to higher education.Considered a quiet town with very low crime, a nice rural feel yet plenty to do, diverse home styles, affordable living, and close proximity to major highways gives residents the best of all worlds.
